“Friday 45” Jean Elias – How Long Can I Go On Fooling Myself

A great bit of Southern Sister Soul from Jean Elias this week, and the only 45 on the Back Beat label out of Houston to be recorded in the famous Muscle Shoals studio.

Released in 1971, the track was written and arranged by Harrison Calloway. Calloway was heavily involved in the Muscle Shoals recording studio, playing Trumpet in the “Muscle Shoals Horns” and being a member of the “Fame Gang”, the studio band for Muscle Shoals and the associated FAME label. Not only is this the only known Muscle Shoals recording to be released on Back Beat, but it is the only known record to be released by Jean Elias, which is a total mystery to me, as this double sider is up there with anything released by some of the bigger names in the Southern Soul scene.

The A side, “You Made Me An Anybody’s Woman”┬áis a killer, but the flip is another thing all together. Amazing horn and string arrangements, funky backbeat and bluesy guitar get you going before Jean drops one of those fully heartfelt vocals that has you believing every single word of the heartache.

If you don’t know about the Muscle Shoals story, i’d suggest checking the 2013 documentary for an introduction.
